The Hindu had reported plight of a differently-abled man

The sole lift at the mini civil station at Aluva stirred into life after having been in disrepair for over a year, putting hundreds of daily visitors, especially differently-abled people, to immense hardship.

The lift was made operational following a report carried by The Hindu on October 21 about the plight of a 34-year-old differently-abled person who had to be carried to the fourth floor of the building by some Good Samaritans.

Shymon Joseph, paralysed from waist down, had turned up at the Aluva mini civil station to appear for the learner’s licence test at the Sub Regional Transport Office (RTO). He had a similar experience last September as well when he visited the mini civil station.

Taking note of the report, District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla summoned the Aluva tahsildar on Saturday and asked the PWD engineering department to repair the lift. The lift was restored by evening the same day. Many crucial offices such as those of Tahisildar, RTO, Agricultural office, Revenue Department office and employment exchange function from the mini civil station.

Revenue officials said the lift, installed at the mini civil station 15 years ago, might need replacement in the long run to avoid further interruptions.
