‘Thanal’ to help children in distress

Kerala State Council for Child Welfare centre to be launched on Nov 1

The Kerala State Council for Child Welfare is embarking on a project to assist children in distress and to provide all necessary assistance to ensure their well-being.

The council will commence the functioning of the ‘Thanal’ centre on November 1 to coincide with the State’s Formation Day. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will formally launch a toll-free number on the occasion. Complaints or grievances that are conveyed to the facility by contacting the number will be acted upon by the council.

According to council general secretary S.P. Deepak, the Thanal project is aimed at helping children who suffered from various disabilities, those who were subjected to child labour, child beggary and other forms of exploitation. Volunteers will be deployed by the council to rescue the children and also intervene in problems faced by their parents, wherever necessary.

The assistance of the Kerala Police, and the Health, Social Justice, Education and Law Departments will also be roped in for the implementation of the project.

A state-level workshop has been conducted for volunteers who have been identified for the project. Additional District Judge (POCSO Act Cases), Thiruvananthapuram, T.K. Minimol inaugurated the workshop. Besides Mr. Deepak, council vice president Azhikodan Chandran and treasurer G. Radhakrishnan also spoke on the occasion.
