Jaisalmer: Farmers agitating over water in Indira Gandhi Nahar Project (IGNP) in Jaisalmer have intensified their stir. The farmers' mahapadao entered 9th day on Monday in Mohangarh. On Sunday, the farmers brought Barmer-Jaisalmer drinking water lift canal to a standstill but released the water later. The farmers also performed 'sadbudhhi yagya' for canal minister. Farmers have announced Mohangarh bandh on October 25. Barmer-Jaisalmer MP Sonaram Choudhary reached the spot and persuaded the farmers. He advised the farmers to go to Jaipur and talk to the government, but farmers refused.
Thousands of farmers took part in the mahapadao. The farmers also warned of continuing their agitation till they get their share of water. Heavy police force was deployed at the spot.
As per information, farmers had warned of a head-on fight with the government. Farmer leader Achla Ram Jat said that for quite a long time the farmers are not getting water and their crops have been ruined and they are burdened under loans. Earlier too, the agitation was pacified by persuasion, but this time, the mahapadao will end only on getting water.
He said that eight days have passed since the mahapadao began but government and administration have paid no heed to it. So, the farmers on Sunday stopped the water. Farmers had given time to government and canal officers till October 21 to release sufficient water in the canal. They also stopped water in canals at Mohangarh and Barmer lift projects.
