Had sent objectionable message on official WhatsApp group

A BJP councillor on Sunday filed a complaint against East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) deputy commissioner Atik Ahmed for sending a lewd message on an official WhatsApp group.

Gunjan Gupta, councillor from ward 18-E in Anand Vihar, said Mr. Ahmed had formed an official WhatsApp group which included all councillors of Shahdara zone and officials of the civic body.

The group was primarily formed so that councillors could contact officials for getting work in their wards done and also keep tab on its progress.

“At 12.05 a.m. on Sunday, Mr. Ahmed sent out a message which was not only objectionable but it also made me, as a woman, feel extremely uncomfortable,” Ms. Gupta said.

The content of the message, however, could not be accessed. Ms. Gupta said a written complaint has been filed and the police have assured that an FIR will be filed by Monday morning.

“I am no longer comfortable interacting with him or any other EDMC official face to face. I am also expecting that the corporation will take action against him,” she said. When contacted Mr. Ahmed refused to comment.

Mayor reacts

East Delhi Mayor Neema Bhagat, however, said that the complaint will be treated seriously and necessary action will be taken if the charges are proven. “No woman should feel unsafe while doing her duty. We will look into the complaint, giving a chance to the official to present his case as well,” she said.
