Guidance on Internet policy formulation process and Internet governance

The second edition of India School on Internet Governance, (inSIG 2017), will be held at the Technopark here from October 24 to 26.

About 15 Indian and international experts will participate in the event, providing guidance to about 70 participants from different parts of India and abroad on Internet policy formulation process and Internet governance.

In addition, a special run-up event on the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is being organised on October 23, specifically for the benefit of students, researchers, and PhD candidates from Kerala who are interested in contributing to the core technologies that run the Internet.

Announcing the three-day meet and education programme, inSIG 2017 programme coordinator Satish Babu said the conference was aimed at increasing the size of India’s IG community and its level of participation in the global Internet governance which was at present disproportionately small relative to its population. Internet Governance (IG) consists of evolving policies and mechanisms under which the Internet’s stakeholders make decisions about the development and use of the Internet.

This is a domain occupied by a whole ecosystem of organisations around the world, most of which are open for stakeholders to join and contribute to, under the present multi-stakeholder model. However, it is not easy for an average end-user, student, researcher or even a government official, to effectively contribute to these global Internet governance processes because of several inhibitory factors. “It is important to ensure that India, with over 330 million Internet users already, is able to project the voices of its user communities in the Internet policy formulation process. This programme is intended to educate and guide more professionals, technology experts, and students to effectively participate in international processes,” Mr. Satish Babu said.
