NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday accused the Election Commission (EC) of being hand-in-glove with the BJP to allegedly delay the Assembly elections in Gujarat.

"What kind of democracy is this? Why is the EC involved? The BJP wants to delay elections because they know they'll lose. The people of Gujarat are against the BJP," charged party leader Manish Tewari in a press conference.

He demanded that the EC carry out its "constitutional responsibilities" and announce elections in the state and "enforce the Model Code of Conduct immediately."

Tewari accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of "behaving more like the chief minister of Gujarat, than the Prime Minister of the country."

The Congress leader questioned the PM and BJP president Amit Shah on their "deafening silence" about the recent bribery allegations levelled against the saffron party and the president of its Gujarat unit by Patidar leader Narendra Patel.

The party also demanded an FIR against the Gujarat BJP and an investigation into the allegations by a high court judge.
