The district administration, which has been implementing mass cleaning, fogging and a series of other programmes to contain dengue, has decided to involve students of the government nursing college here in eradicating Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and their larvae.

The nursing students were explained about the materials which serve as sources for mosquito breeding, process of breeding and the method of identifying Aedes mosquito larvae at a training session organised by the Department of Public Health here on Monday.

Collector S. Natarajan gave inputs to the student on how to identity the aedes larvae at source. The students would be sent in groups to different areas during the eradication programme.

The Collector later visited the Government Headquarters Hospital here, and handed over to the hospital a new cell counter device used for counting blood platelets and haemoglobin level of dengue-affected patients. The additional device would help in giving the right treatment to patients without any delay.

Cell counter devices were available in all the government hospitals, and people who had fever could get their blood platelets checked in the hospitals, the Collector said.

There were round-the-clock fever wards at the headquarters hospital and Paramakudi Government Hospital, he said.

Joint Director (Medical Services) Sagaya Stephen Raj, Deputy Director (Tuberculosis) Muniarasu, Headquarters Hospital Superintendent Jawaharlal, Zonal Medical Officer Vinayagamurthy and Nursing College Principal Samundeeswari addressed the training session.
