Debts suspected to be the reason

A woman along with her middle aged son committed suicide here on Sunday.

The duo resorted to the extreme step at one of the rathi mandapams located in the vicinity of the APSRTC bus station normally used by the pilgrims reaching the town on foot.

The incident came to light when the deceased Sekhar believed to be in his early forties walked towards a petty shop situated just a few feet away from the mandapam in the early hours of the day and suddenly collapsed on the road.

The local shopkeeper immediately informed the on duty security guards at the TTD’s Madhava Nilayam. But even before the medical team could arrive at the spot he is believed to have breathed his last. It is at the same time that one of the onlookers also noticed his mother later identified as Pushpa (60) lying dead frothed at her mouth.

Two town Circle Inspector K. Venkata Ravi said the duo were residents of Mangala Veedhi in Chittoor and had reached the town on Saturday afternoon. They also hired a mat to spend their night inside the mandapam.

Preliminary enquiries suggest that unable to clear the mounting debts both the mother and son have decided to end their lives. Investigations are yet to reveal whether the duo had consumed pesticides or sleeping pills. The police have also established contact with the family members and informed them about the tragedy.
