THANE: An unidentified youngster posing as a customer stole gold ornaments worth Rs 75,000 from a jewellery showroom located in the Shanti Nagar area at Wagle Estate on Thursday.
The incident took place at around 7pm from the showroom on the third day of Diwali.
The owner of the store, Hitesh Chowdhary, claimed that the shop was buzzing with customers in the evening when a youth entered the store and started browsing through an array of ornaments on display.
Chowdhary mentioned that there was nothing suspicious about the man and that he looked like a genuine customer. Within a few minutes, the accused decided to wear a gold chain and pose in front of the mirror. While the employees were distracted with other customers, the youngster took advantage of the situation and escaped with it.
The next day, it was noticed that the ornament was missing and a complaint was lodged at Shree Nagar police station.
A police official said, "The search will be based on a complete description given by the owner. Chowdhary has given us a description of the man and even what he was wearing, which will speed up investigations."
The accused has been booked under Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code for theft.
