Hyderabad: Mild tremors cause panic among Borabanda residents for the second day

HYDERABAD: For the second day in a row, residents of Borabanda in Hyderabad had to spend sleepless nights due to mild tremors experienced in the hilly terrains of Somajiguda area.

No damages or losses have been recorded in the area.

The tremors were first felt during the early hours of Saturday and could be experienced at regular frequencies throughout the day at Borabandas' Indira Nagar, Sai Baba Nagar, Habeeb Fathima Nagar Phase 2 and 3, Ambedkar Nagar, and Bhavani Shankar Nagar.  

Though there were no losses or damages caused to buildings, the frequent tremors described by many residents as the sound of a hollow sound coming from within the earth made the residents of Borabanda rush out of their houses anticipating it as an earthquake.

 "There has been panic all over the place due to the tremors. We have the Monsoon Emergency teams deployed in the areas to assist the people in case of an emergency but nothing as such has been reported till now," said A Ramesh, Deputy Commissioner, Yousufguda.

The National Geophysical Research Institue (NGRI) which installed two stations on Saturday night to track the tremors recorded four minor tremors soon after the installation.

Chief Scientist Dr. Srinagesh Davaluri, Head, Seismology Observatory, NGRI, said that the tremors were nothing to worry about. "The tremors are usual and there is nothing to worry about. It is the sub-terrain sound coming due to the area exposed to high granite concentration," he said.

"There were four microearthquakes of negative magnitude were recorded after installing the two stations," he added

Previously, last year, there was micro earthquakes reported in the month of October in the same area.

The extremely intense rainfall spell at Madhapur region that flooded several parts in its vicinity is very closely located to Borabanda can be considered as a reason for the tremors. Experts confirmed that the increase in rainfall might be a cause for the water to seep inside the rocks that might have caused a minor earthquake of negative magnitude.
