NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro’s Pragati Maidan Station would witness a major revamp soon.

The station, with a footfall of 20,000 per day, is inundated with commuters during India International Trade Fair and other exhibitions at Pragati Maidan when it caters to over one lakh commuters a day.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) would be expanding the station to accommodate more passengers and also give it a facelift.

A vacant plot spread over 1,000 square metres adjacent to the station would be converted into a covered parking lot with stilts. The parking lot would be used as the security check area during trade fair, when the footfall is maximum. “This area is still used during trade fair for selling metro tokens and fair tickets, but now we are going to cover it and use it as an entry to the station with a security check point area. Rest of the year, it will be used as a parking lot,” said a senior DMRC official.

The roof of the parking lot would be joined with the concourse level of the station on the first floor. This would mean that the concourse would be expanded by 1,000 square metres. “This will help us in expanding the circulation area for passengers. Also, this new area will be used to install drinking water and food kiosks, information booths and toilet among other things,” he said.

The toilet area would also be doubled, the official said. “Currently, we have a toilet outside the station and one inside, which is used by the staff. The new toilet block will be open to commuters,” he said.

The changes would be in place by next year, he said. “This year, we are not expecting much rush for the trade fair. The exhibition area will be half the usual this time due to renovation work going on at Pragati Maidan,” the official added.
