Gurgaon municipal corporation to add 3,000 sanitation workers

GURGAON: The municipal corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) will add another 3000 sanitation workers to its existing work force of around 4000 sanitation workers. The new recruits will largely focus on sweeping and cleaning streets across the city.

According to MCG officials, the sanitation workers currently employed with the corporation are not sufficient to handle the work load. "As of now we do not have sufficient people on the ground and there is a high churn rate among the workers as many of them are migrants which leave a huge scope for improvement. Hence the addition in the number of workers," said Anu Sheokhand, joint commissioner, MCG who is also the nodal officer for sanitation.

She added that the recent expansion of the municipal limits and the inclusion of the new sectors in the integrated waste management plan would require more people. Out of the corporation's 4000 sanitation workers 350 are permanent MCG employees, 1833 are direct contract of payroll employees, 100 are from panchayat departments and rest are hired through various contractors.

The whole plan is to move towards a 'Swacch City' and combined with the execution of the integrated waste management plan, which kicks off in Phase 1 this December, such steps will help MCG towards that goal, Sheokhand believes. MCG signed the contract with the Ecogreen Energy Pvt Ltd for an integrated waste management plan this August. Under the plan, the assigned agency will take over the Bandhwari waste treatment plan and convert waste into energy.

The plan also includes door to door pickup of waste and two- way segregation and while the bio degradable waste will be converted into compost and the rest will be converted into energy. Ecogreen will also be setting up a leachate treatment plant at Bandhwari. MCG is conducting awareness drives in all the wards regarding the new waste management plant, says Sheokhand.
