Former councillor hacked to death in Madurai

Personal enmity suspected to be the cause

MADURAI

A former councillor of Madurai Corporation, G. Ganesan (53), was hacked to death near the railway crossing at Anupanadi near Teppakulam in the city around 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Police said that Ganesan was riding a motorbike along with his grandson when a few assailants, who came on two motorcycles, intercepted him. After pushing him down from the vehicle, they indiscriminately hacked him with machetes.

With serious head injuries, Ganesan collapsed on the road in a pool of blood, and the assailants fled the scene.

Ganesan was immediately rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital in an autorickshaw. However, he was declared brought dead, the police said.

Ganesan was an independent councillor elected to the Corporation council from ward 57 for one term till 2006. Subsequently, his wife Khaderammal was elected for two terms.

The police suspect that the murder could be due to personal enmity. Teppakulam police are investigating.
