10:50 hrs IST: Hello and welcome to HT’s live coverage of the first ODI of the three-game series between India and New Zealand.
India’s supreme confidence comes in all varieties of cricket has come from the depth of talent available. When a team can afford to play without two of its leading spinners – Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja – it tells a story in itself.
New Zealand have been honest in their approach. In Indian conditions, the Blackcaps know they have a challenge at hand and the threat primarily comes from a clutch of young bowlers who have consistently troubled the best of batsmen.
New Zealand’s batsmen know they will have to subdue India’s spinners if they are to have any chance of winning the series. Left-arm Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav and right-arm leg break Yuzvendra Chahal have established themselves as India’s latest attacking combination. Add to this the telling length and line of Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
India, second in the ODI rankings, can regain the top ODI spot from South Africa if they win the series 3-0. The second ODI takes place in Pune on Wednesday, with the third in Kanpur on October 29. The two sides will then play three T20 matches. New Zealand are ranked fifth in the world.
