Donald Cairns is the 2017 Chesco Farmer of the Year

If asked, Donald W. Cairns will tell you that there are three foundations he counts on to strive for excellence in farming, his chosen profession: conservation, preservation, and education. He uses “best practices” in tilling his land to ensure that not only are his crops of superior quality, but also that the land they come from is not harmed in the process. He has protected his farm from development through preservation easements, and has been a missionary of sorts in convincing others to do likewise.

Norristown police Chief Mark Talbot Sr. discusses plan to reduce gun violence

By almost every measure, crime in the municipality has been steadily decreasing in the almost four years since Mark Talbot Sr. became police chief. But 2017 has seen a spike in one major category: gun violence. With 15 shooting incidents to date, including several homicides, Talbot and his leadership team acted quickly to devise a 40-point plan to address the issue and curb the violence that remains one of the primary stumbling blocks in changing the perception of Norristown and restoring confidence in public safety.

Community rallies to raise awareness of childhood cancer at Red Corner Benefit

Anyone from the Douglassville community can tell you that if there’s one thing they’re never short on, it’s helping hands. Saturday proved that to be true when thousands of people showed up at Red Corner Road for the ninth annual Red Corner Benefit.

Red Cross asks for blood donors before the holidays

With the busy holiday season approaching, the American Red Cross encourages donors to give blood now to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients this winter. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, many regular donors delay giving due to holiday activities and travel. This often decreases the amount of donated blood available for patients. More donations are needed in the weeks leading up to the holidays to help stock the shelves for patients like Emily Bratton. After the birth of her first child, she received several units of blood.

Doug Pederson’s guidance has Carson Wentz in on the MVP hunt

Every Thursday night or so, Doug Pederson talks about football and life with Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz. Make that football and “deer hunting stories.” Pederson didn’t mention if they were outfitted in camouflage and orange vests, but you can guess they drifted into that mindset. And probably played a little country music. “He loves to deer hunt and all that, and I do, too,” Pederson said Saturday. “I was talking about my days in Green Bay with Brett (Favre). It’s just that time where he and I can just sort of take a deep breath, exhale, and get kind of on the same page going into the game.”

All in a day’s dental work for Flyers’ Simmonds

Wayne Simmonds isn’t your typical modern hockey star. The roadmap that is his face reveals him to be a throwback player. His innate aggressiveness, which on more than occasion detours into a fearsome fighting persona, only enhances his best attribute — that of goal scorer. Perhaps it has taken a while for him to bloom into the complete player he’s become, but whether it’s with a potential winning goal on his stick or a nasty meeting with an odd enforcer/dinosaur that may cross his path, Simmonds has always seemed to play with a certain air of fearlessness.
