Leading junior players will vie for honours in the Dr N Mahalingam 28th National Under-17 Open and Girls Chess Championship beginning here from October 24.
Winners in the nine-day tournament would qualify to represent India both in the World and Commonwealth Chess championships.
So far 100 boys and 70 girls have registered to take part in the tournament, being conducted at Kumaraguru College of Technology and the number was likely to cross the 200 mark, a press release from the college today said.
A total prize money of Rs 2.50 lakh would be on offer, the release said.
