COIMBATORE: A 24-year-old police constable and his elder brother were arrested on Friday by the Coimbatore rural police for allegedly assaulting a relative after he refused to give them money to buy liquor.

On Wednesday night, M Tamilselvan, a constable attached to the Tamil Special Police (TSP)-IV battalion at Kovaipudur, and his brother M Mohanprabhakaran, 25, were consuming liquor along with a relative R Nataraj, 38, of Agrahara Samakulam. During the course of their drinking session, an argument broke out between Tamilselvan and Nataraj as the former demanded money to buy more liquor.

When Nataraj refused to part with the money, Tamilselvan attacked him using a broken liquor bottle. Mohanprabhakaran also assaulted Nataraj. He sustained severe injuries to the head and had to be hospitalised. Based on Nataraj's complaint, the Kovilpalayam police registered a case against Tamilselvan and his elder brother under relevant sections of the IPC.
