The last man standing from Africa will be decided in Guwahati today when Ghana play Mali in the first quarterfinal match of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The 5 PM IST fixture is a repeat of this year’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations final in Gabon where Mali successfully defended their title with a 1-0 win over Black Starlets Ghana, thanks to Mamadou Samake’s first-half strike. Ghana was in group A alongside India. They had topped the pool with two wins and a shock defeat against US, who are also in the last-eight stafe. Two-time champions Ghana are seeking to revive their glory days in the tournament, having last won it way back in 1995. They have shown the intent from the word go, and barring the reverse against USA in the group stage, the Ghanians have been on the ball.

Ghana had been beaten 1-0 by Mali in the final of the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, and they would be determined to avenge that loss. In Guwahati’s Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium, Ghana’s defence will be tested by the free-scoring Mali players.

Ghana coach Samuel Kwasi Fabin believes his team has the talent to win their third U-17 World Cup. “The Cup of Nations defeat is behind us. We will be out to show we are the best,” he said.
