Contraband hidden in secret pockets

Attempts to smuggle gold through passengers flying from Gulf countries to Hyderabad are not new but the one reported two days ago at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad was weird.

Two men concealed three gold biscuits — weighing 612.5 grams — in specially-made secret pockets of their inner wear. They flew into the airport through different flights. They hid the gold biscuits in the secret pockets created on the front side of their inner-wear.

They managed to pass through the green channel of international arrival hall. Sleuths of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs department kept a tab on the movements of suspicious passengers based on the tip-off through their network of informants.

But the two passengers were caught and the gold biscuits were seized. Intensified checks by the Customs officials resulted in seizure of gold biscuits weighing nearly 3.4 kilos in the past 10 days from passengers travelling in flights originating from Middle East countries.
