He allegedly attempted suicide

A video clip, in which a Sub-Inspector attached to the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion at Vellore has levelled serious allegations of corruption and irregularities involving higher-level officials, is doing the rounds on social media. Incidentally, the police officer allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison at his residence in Coimbatore on Thursday.

Srikanth, 47, who originally belonged to the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battaion IV at Kovaipudur here, allegedly attempted suicide by consuming malachite powder (chemical cow dung powder) on Thursday, and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

He was earlier transferred to the Pochampalli Battalion in 2015, and in 2016, his petition to be transferred back to the Kovaipudur battalion was considered favourably. Later, he was transferred to the Vellore Battalion.

In the video clip, the Sub-Inspector claimed that he was being victimised for exposing irregularities in the preparation of the mess bill for the personnel and the illegal felling of trees in the battalion’s premises. He also claimed that bribes were demanded for sanctioning leave for the personnel.

Police sources said that an inquiry would be launched into the allegations, once the Sub-Inspector recovers and gets discharged from hospital.

(Assistance for overcoming suicidal thoughts is available on the State’s health helpline 104 and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.)
