Nagpur: Activists of Youth Congress on Saturday staged demonstrations in Kumbhar Toli to demand clearing of garbage dumps in various parts of East Nagpur.
The agitators condemned the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) stating that the civic body was ignoring cleanliness in the city.
Activists led by president of Youth Congress and corporator Bunty Shelke and working president of Youth Congress' East Nagpur unit Akshay Ghatole protested in front of one of the garbage dumps.
Shelke said garbage dumps are common also in other parts of the city. "Dengue has claimed some lives while many have fallen sick in the city. The disease is the result of garbage dumps prevailing in residential localities. The NMC health department is sitting pretty despite such a serious problem," he said.
Shelke added that the garbage dumps exposed the big claims made by NMC under the Central government's Swachh Bharat Mission. "Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is from the city but the situation has not improved. Cleanliness is a routine thing and does not require big investments. BJP-led ruling alliance in the NMC has always neglected such important civic services," he said.
Shelke also Kumbhar Toli ward is represented by leader of opposition Tanaji Wanve but the situation here is worst. "This prove how NMC is neglecting wards represented by corporators of other parties. NMC should wake up and prevent spread of vector-borne diseases," he said.
Activists Rakshana Dahiwale, Sapna Motghare, Vishaka Ghodewar, Vijay Dhawde, Omdeep Zade, Vaibhav Dahikar, Rajendra Thakre, Hemant Kature, Swapnil Bawankar, Rahul Mohod, Nikhil Balkhote and others participated in the agitation.
