Fleeing after hitting a car, man rams scooter, kills rider

In his attempt to flee after hitting a WagonR on Friday evening, a man driving an i10 rammed a scooty on the Shalimar Bagh flyover. The impact was such that the rider was thrown off the flyover onto the road below. He died on the spot. The accused, Saurabh (26), was nabbed by two bikers and beaten up by a crowd that gathered at the spot, following which he was handed over to police.

Police said the victim was identified as Vikas (22). His body was taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital. It was handed over to the family Saturday morning after post-mortem. Vikas’s brother, Ajay, said: “My brother was returning from his office on Lawrence Road. He lived with us in Burari and we wanted him to come home early. We had celebrated Diwali together just a day before.”

According to police, Saurabh had left his house in Rohini and reached the Shalimar Bagh flyover. Around 6.50 pm, he hit a WagonR from the side. Pankaj Goud, who was driving the WagonR, was with his family at the time. “I was with my wife and kids. I was going to visit my brother when the man hit my car. He sped away even as we slowed down,” he said.
Police said while Saurabh was speeding away, he hit Vikas and dragged his scooty several metres.

A senior police officer said, “Vikas was flung in the air and onto the road below. We received a call around 7.05 pm. By the time we reached the spot, Saurabh had been caught by some motorists. His car was also damaged. The accused used to work at his father’s plastic factory in Narela.”
