Kolkata witnessed a relatively quiet Diwali on Thursday, thanks to continuous rain and strict police vigilance. However, 730 people were arrested in the city for disorderly conduct, including playing loudspeakers beyond the stipulated hour, and bursting firecrackers that produce sound more than 90 decibel. “While 405 were arrested for disorderly conduct, 325 people were arrested for bursting banned crackers,” said a police officer. Also, 362 kg of firecrackers and 51 litre of illegal alcohol were seized, the officer added.

Police received around 125 complaints from various places till wee hours on Friday. “While 117 complaints alleged that firecrackers were producing sound beyond the permissible limit, eight complaints were received for disorderly conduct… We took action in all cases,” the officer said. Most complaints came from areas such as Park Street, Shakespeare Sarani and Alipore. On the other hand, most arrests were made from the northern part of the city.
