Collector A.Annadurai slapped a penalty of ₹1000 on the District Central Library administration after discovering larvae of the aedes aegypti, the dengue causing mosquito, in the library premises.
The action comes amidst intensive efforts to identify and destroy mosquito breeding sources as part of dengue prevention measure.
Mr.Annadurai, who supervised preventive measures against dengue in Thanjavur Corporation limits, found larvae in the water tank of the library and in vessels kept on the terrace of the building. Apart from imposing a fine, he ordered issue of show cause notices to the library authorities for initiating departmental action, a press release said.
He levied a penalty of ₹10,000 on Pasupathi of Old Rameswaram Road after finding mosquito larvae on his piece of land. He ordered penalties of ₹500 on a few other residents and traders in Vanakkara Vaikolkara Street, Sengamalam and Redipalayam Pudutheru.
He said 34 persons who had tested positive for dengue were undergoing treatment and intensive cleaning drive have been taken up on a radius of about one kilometre around the residences of the affected persons.
Later in the day, Health Minister C.Vijaya Baskar, accompanied by R.Doraikkannu, Minister for Agriculture, inspected the Government Medical College and Raja Mirasudar hospitals and reviewed the treatment being offered to patients with fever.
In Tiruvarur, Minister for Food R.Kamaraj inspected dengue prevention measures in Alangudi, Valangaiman, Kudavasal, Koradacheri and Koothanallur. Mr. Kamaraj said 58 persons who had tested positive for dengue have been treated so far. Currently five persons with dengue fever were undergoing treatment. Ten rapid response medical teams, 30 fever prevention teams and 459 field workers have been deployed to check the spread of dengue, he said.
