Scientists say they have come up with a better way to determine which asbestos-exposed people could benefit from more intense mesothelioma screening.

RALEIGH, N.C. (PRWEB) October 20, 2017

Researchers in Scotland have just released their findings on an assessment tool that they say could help doctors identify and monitor patients at highest risk for malignant mesothelioma. Surviving Mesothelioma has more on the new report. Click here to read the full article.

Authors of a study conducted through the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Edinburgh say their new evaluation tool uses a detailed questionnaire to determine a person’s likely level of asbestos exposure and quantify their mesothelioma risk.

“The assessment is based on the tasks carried out and includes parameters for substance emission potential, activity emission potential, the effectiveness of any local control measures, passive emission, the fractional time the asbestos source is active, and the efficiency of any respiratory protection worn,” writes lead author John W, Cherrie.

According to a new article in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health, the information could be used to decide which people might benefit from CT scans and even preventive medication.

“If this tool could be used to help identify people at risk of pleural mesothelioma earlier, when intervention is more likely to effective, it could be lifesaving,” says Alex Strauss, Managing Editor for Surviving Mesothelioma.
