Mersal, the Vijay starrer film has come in for criticism from the BJP. The BJP registered its displeasure over some dialogues in the movie that questioned the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax.

Tamil Nadu BJP State President, Tamilisai Soundararajan demanded producers remove these scenes. "I object to certain scenes in Vijay's movie 'Mersal'. Certain scenes project GST and digital India in a bad light and we want these scenes removed. Vijay has political ambitions and that is the reason why these scenes are there in the movie," she also said.
The film has been in the eye of the storm even prior to its release. The crew had to secure a no-objection certificate from the Animal Welfare Board after objections of the use of animals without permission cropped up.
