Virat Kohli, the captain of Indian cricket team may be way ahead of his coach Ravi Shastri in terms of fame, but the latter still beats him in terms of salary.

According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo’s ‘The Cricket Monthly’, the Indian coach earns 17 percent more than Kohli who captains the team. With a yearly salary of over Rs 7.6 crore, Ravi Shastri is also the highest paid coach in international cricket.

Among the coaches, Shastri is way ahead of his counterparts in terms of salary earned. He earns more than twice of what the Australian coach Darren Lehmann, who is second in the list with a salary of over Rs 3.5 crore earns. Also, there exists a large gap in the salary earned by coaches, with those coaching teams like South Africa and Sri Lanka earning a salary that is approximately a tenth of what Shastri earns.

Virat Kohli may be way ahead of his contemporaries in terms of records and revenue earned via advertisements. But still, when it comes to the salary he falls behind two of his biggest rivals i.e. Australian captain Steven Smith and English captain Joe Root.

Compared to Virat who takes home an annual salary of over Rs 6.5 crore Smith and Root earn approximately Rs 9.6 crore and Rs 9 crore respectively.

The disparity in salaries of between international team captains is more evident as captains of Bangladesh and Zimbabwe receive less than a tenth of Steve Smith who leads the pack.

Cricketers still a long way behind

Even with such large incomes, cricketers trail a long way in comparison to other sport personalities. The salary of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (Rs 377 crore), Lewis Hamilton (Rs 247 crore) is a lot higher than what a cricketer could earn.

The data though is by no means enough to understand the total income that is earned by players and coaches. The large revenue they earn through advertisements and various other commitments are far higher than their salaries.
