Everton have had a tough season so far and it got no better for them when they hosted French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais. The Merseyside outfit lost the match 2-1 and the match involved an ugly brawl between the two sides. It started when Everton skipper Ashley Williams pushed Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and the situation quickly escalated after striker Bertrand Traore confronted Williams near a part of the stands off the pitch.

One Everton supporter, who was holding a child, appeared to push Lyon defender Mouctar Diakhaby in the midst of the melee. A video of that has gone viral on Twitter with the visibly agitated fan appearing inside the frame behind all the brawling players. Diakhaby, who looked like one of the players trying to pull away Traore, was the man closest to him and it looks like he punched the defender.

Diakhaby and a few other Lyon players started screaming and pointing in his direction. There were a few other fans who were having a go at the players but they were held back by the stewards. “It’s what happens. It’s football,” Williams said in a television interview after the match, “It’s high emotions. We want to win the game, they want to win the game and stuff happens. That was just one of those times.” Both Traore and Williams were given Yellow cards after the incident. Everton could be further fined by the UEFA for the involvement of a fan.

Lyon were leading 1-0 at that point and Williams went on to equalise for Everton a few minutes later. But it wasn’t to be a good day at Goodison Park as Traore scored another to give Lyon a 2-1 win. It means that Everton are bottom of their group after three matches in the Europa League and three points behind second place that they need to get to progress. Everton have struggled in the league this season too. They have managed just two wins and as many draws in their first eight matches and that leaves them two places above the relegation zone.
