If you use Google Maps for navigation, you must be aware of its earth ‘view’ in which it shows the satellite images of the area you are looking into. However, now you can also look at the surface of Moon, Mars and other celestial bodies.

Google Maps, along with astronomical artist Björn Jónsson, has stitched pictures sent by various spacecraft and probes, including Cassini, sent for planetary explorations to create the surface view of various planets and moons. They include Mercury, Venus, Ceres (dwarf planet between Mars and Jupiter), Europa (Jupiter’s moon), Titan, Rhea (Saturn’s moons), etc.

Stafford Marquardt, the Product Manager for Google Maps, said, “During its mission, Cassini recorded and sent nearly half a million pictures back to Earth, allowing scientists to reconstruct these distant worlds in unprecedented detail.”

“Now you can visit these places—along with many other planets and moons—in Google Maps right from your computer.”

The craters, lakes or other physical features of celestial bodies are annotated. A user can explore icy plains of Enceladus, where Cassini discovered water beneath the moon's crust, Titan’s methane lakes and the massive crater of Mimas.
