CMCH fully equipped to combat dengue, says Minister

Anti-dengue operations are on, and the government is fully equipped to combat the same, said Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Special Schemes Implementation, S.P. Velumani here on Tuesday.

He was speaking to reporters after visiting patients at the special ward of CMCH here.

He said that the Public Health Department and the hospitals were fully equipped to handle both water-borne and vector-borne diseases. CMCH being a tertiary and speciality hospital, has about 14 patients with dengue from Tirupur, and two each from the Nilgiris, Erode, Tanjore besides 15 from Coimbatore.

Special wards for treating fever were functioning round-the-clock and the hospital has formed a panel with senior teaching faculty supervising the treatment. Every patient was being subjected to a blood test thrice a day and hospital has stocked adequate platelettes to ensure uninterrupted treatment.

Whenever a patient was admitted to the hospital, the address of the patient was immediately communicated to the local body concerned to analyse the reasons for dengue and initiate remedial measures to prevent the outbreak in respective locations, he said. This had helped in eradicating the breeding source for mosquitoes to a considerable extent, Mr. Velumani said.

Adequate number of mobile clinics have been dispatched to rural areas for conducting screening camps and rendering treatment. In addition, local bodies have been provided with adequate equipments and medicines for spraying mosquitoe repellents and machines for carrying out fumigation on a sustained basis. Officials from health department and local bodies have been asked to carry out field visits on a regular basis to ensure that their zones become dengue-free zones.

The Minister distributed Nilavembu Kashayam and juice made of pappaya leaves. District Collector T.N. Hariharan, DRO Durai Ravichandran, Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan, Deputy Commissioner P. Gandhimathi, CMCH Dean Asokan, RMO Soundaravel, Project Director of DRDA Rupan Shankar Raj and officials from Health Department took part in the review meeting held.
