Rajkot: Two Congress corporators were arrested on Wednesday for tearing apart banners of Diwali and New Year's greetings by chief minister Vijay Rupani on Tuesday night.
Congress corporators — Vijay Vank (35) and Mansukh Kalariya (55) — were arrested on the complaint of Amit Cholera (51), cultural department estate manager of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC). Cholera is a resident of Race Course Ring Road.
"Ironically, any RMC official does not have the right to file a complaint in this regard as the banners had been put up by BJP and not by the RMC," said an RMC official.
Vank and Kalariya were arrested as they came out after participating at RMC's general board meeting.
"This incident was the fallout of another incident, in which the statue of Indira Gandhi on 150-Feet Ring Road at Indira Circle had been allegedly desecrated two days ago. Somebody put a wafer packet in the statue's hand. Congress workers led by Vank and Kalariya staged a dharna. This must have prompted the Congress workers to resort to vandalism," said Gandhigram police station sub-inspector B C Parmar.
