Ritabrata Banerjee enjoying protection of Mukul Roy, alleges woman who accused him of rape

The controversy centering Rajya Sabha MP Ritabrata Banerjee, who is facing rape charges brought by a Bengaluru-based software professional, got a new twist with the woman alleging that he was being protected by Mukul Roy, a former Trinamool Congress heavyweight who was also a Rajya Sabha MP till last week.

The 38-year old MP, who was expelled from CPI(M) for “anti-party and anti-communist role” in mid-September, has been summoned twice by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Bengal for questioning. But he is yet to appear for interrogation.

Banerjee, too, filed a police complaint alleging extortion by the woman, who originally hails from the north Bengal town of Balurghat.

“A few days ago I got a phone call from someone who introduced herself as Dr Archana Majumdar. She told me that I should not continue the muckraking with Ritabrata Baneerjee and, instead, settle the issue. I declined,” Banerjee’s former girlfriend told the media.

“Subsequently I found out that Dr Archana Majumdar was an associate of Mukul Roy. It is clear that Ritabrata Banerjee is enjoying the protection of Roy.”

Roy told a section of the media that Archana Majumdar was a relative of his. “But I don’t know who the woman (Ritabrata’s former girlfriend). Neither do I have any connection Ritabrata,” he said.

Incidentally, photos and videos of intimate moments of Rajya Sabha MP Ritabrata Banerjee and his former girlfriend have gone viral on social media.

Recently, there were speculations that Banerjee was keeping in touch with Roy, who also severed his links with Trinamool Congress and was trying to join BJP.

In her complaint filed on October 10, Banerjee’s former girlfriend alleged that the MP threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed their intimate adventures in public. She also alleged that the MP even promised her money to the tune of Rs 50 lakhs if she kept the affairs under cover.

Before lodging the police complaint, she tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to her allegations on Twitter. Her main allegation was the MP promised marriage and got intimate with her but subsequently turned his back on her.

Banerjee, 38, is sniffing a conspiracy to damage his political career.

Incidentally, the CPI(M) state committee in West Bengal received 19 complaints pertaining to sexual exploitation against Ritabrata. A three member probe committee was formed to investigate the allegations against him that included sexual exploitation, lavish lifestyle unbecoming of a communist MP and leaking party secrets outside.

In a counter allegation, the 38 year old MP accused the top leadership of CPI(M) acting in a biased manner against him.
