‘Happy Birthday Jumbo!’ Former and current cricketers wish Anil Kumble on his 47th birthday

Former India captain and coach Anil Kumble turned 47 on Tuesday. Widely regarded as one of the greatest spinners of all time, Kumble retired from ODI cricket after India’s forgettable 2007 ICC World Cup campaign. In an international career spanning nearly two decades, Kumble took 619 wickets in Test cricket and 337 in ODIs. He is the only Indian to have taken 10 wickets in a single Test innings. He was also only the second player overall to do so and he made the achievement against Pakistan in New Delhi. Kumble was named captain of the Indian Test team in 2007, just a month after his 37th birthday.

He retired from Test cricket in 2008. Since then, Kumble has remained active in the game. He was President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. More recently he was coach of the Indian men’s cricket team for one year. During his time as coach, India beat New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia in Test matches at home and West Indies away from home and reached the final of the ICC Champions Trophy. But he decided to not continue in the post after differences with captain Virat Kohli, as admitted by Kumble himself.

As one would expect, former and current players, both India and otherwise, and other personalities from the cricketing fraternity took to Twitter to wish Anil Kumble.

He remains the third highest wicket-taker behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne and is the only Indian and the third player to have taken more than 600 wickets in a career.
