Search for woman’s body called off

more-in

The joint search operations for the body of Ningamma, who was washed down a drain on Friday along with her daughter in Laggere, was called off on Tuesday with no results.

The search team co-ordinated by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) combed the area till Shanamangala near Bidadi, 41 km from the spot where the mother-daughter duo was washed away. The body of the daughter, Pushpa, 22, was found near Kumbalagodu, 15 km from Laggere, on Sunday.

Pradeep K.K., emergency coordinator (disaster management) for Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority, said the search team thoroughly combed the valley up to 41 km away from the spot but failed to find the body. “Ten strategic points along the 41-km path were thoroughly searched again on Tuesday but to no avail,” he said.

It can be recalled that civic agencies had failed to recover the body of Shanthakumar, 35, a labour supervisor who was similarly washed away in the storm-water drain (SWD) in May in Kurubarahalli, not very far from the spot where the mother-daughter duo was washed away last week.

ORRCA miffed

Meanwhile, after water levels on an inundated Outer Ring Road finally depleted, enabling regular traffic movement, the ORR Companies Association (ORRCA) wrote to Mahendra Jain, additional chief secretary, Urban Development Department, saying, “There is a growing sense that Bengaluru is at a risk with inadequate infrastructure vis-a-vis other destinations.”

Mr. Jain was not available for comment.
