NEW DELHI: The house of a former PDP sarpanch, who was on Monday killed by terrorists, was burned down by a mob in Shopian.
The family members of Mohammad Ramzan, including his mother, Rafiqa, wife Nusrat Begum, brother Farooq Ahmed Sheikh, two sons and two daughters, were rescued by the police.
Director General of state police SP Vaid called the incident "inhumane" and "shameless."
"It's simply inhumane. The tears of his kin had not even dried when they had to run for cover for their own lives. The family had not even condoled the death of their loved one properly before such a senseless act instigated by terrorists was perpetrated on them in less than 24 hours," Vaid said.
The mob was mainly instigated by over-ground workers of the outfit, police have said.
An FIR has been registered against the attackers and the police have promised "strict action" against those involved.
Ramzan, a former PDP sarpanch, was attacked and killed by three Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists last evening.
Family members who witnessed the attack entered into a scuffle with the assailants, killing one, a local called Showkat Ahmad.
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday condemned the acts of violence.
"Such dastardly acts can't justify or achieve any political goals," she said.
