Amit Shah Is Man Of The Match Of BJP Victories, Says PM Modi: 10 Points

PM Modi addressed nearly 7 lakh BJP workers at the mega rally in Gujarat's Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar:  "Amit Shah is the man of the match," Prime Minister Narendra Modi told lakhs of cheering BJP leaders today at a rally in Gandhinagar, the capital of his home state Gujarat, where assembly elections will be held by the end of the year. The BJP concluded its Gujarat Gaurav Yatra (March of Honour) which it began on October 1, and party chief Amit Shah and top state leaders were on stage with the Prime Minister. The PM's visit came amid allegations by the opposition that the BJP-led Centre pressured the Election Commission into delaying announcing elections in Gujarat to allow the Prime Minister to announce sops today.
Here are the top 10 developments in this story:
  1. The Prime Minister said Mr Shah was responsible for the BJP's many and continued wins in state elections, including the mega victory in Uttar Pradesh earlier this year, and he would continue to lead the party to success in the Gujarat elections, also ensuring a BJP return at the Centre in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
  2. The BJP, which has been in power in Gujarat for two decades, hopes to win a record fifth time this year. Party chief Amit Shah has set it a target of winning 150 of Gujarat's 182 Assembly seats.
  3. "Weather report: Ahead of elections, Gujarat will today have rain of rhetoric," tweeted Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in Hindi, calling it a "jumlon ki baarish."
  4. Last week the Election Commission announced assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh but not in Gujarat, which critics said deviated from the practice of announcing elections together for states whose assembly terms end close to each other - in this case two weeks apart.
  5. The Congress has alleged that the Gujarat election dates were not announced last week because the BJP wanted to ensure that a model code of conduct, under which announcement of schemes that may influence voters is banned, would not be enforced before the PM's visit today.
  6. The Election Commission has rejected the allegation. The BJP has called it "negative politics."
  7. The Prime Minister has made multiple visits to Gujarat ahead of the elections. Last week, on a two-day visit, he inaugurated various projects in Rajkot, his hometown Vadnagar, Gandhinagar and Bharuch.
  8. The BJP had won 115 seats in the 2012 assembly elections. Mr Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001 and held the post till he left for Delhi as Prime Minister after winning the 2014 national election.
  9. He picked Anandiben Patel to be Chief Minister of Gujarat, but she stepped down last year after a massive agitation by the Patel community for reservation in jobs and education and amid speculation of a fallout with Amit Shah. She was succeeded by Vijay Rupani.
  10. Rahul Gandhi has been campaigning hard in the state and the Congress attempts to recapture power in the state. It has however been plagued by internal turbulence, with its most senior leader over the last few months with its most senior leader Shankersinh Vaghela leaving the party with several top leaders earlier this year.
