Indore: Diabetes is a silent killer and now, turned into an epidemic around the world. The disease has been killing a large number of people silently and the number has been increasing continuously, mainly due to sedentary lifestyle. However, an ongoing research of stem cell transplant can be proved boon for the people and they can get rid of the disease.
“A research over stem cell transplant is undergoing in Boston. In this, researchers are experimenting to take out the stem cell of a patient and to convert in beta cells before transplanting it back which can end the diabetes. The research would be completed by 2020 and everybody is looking for its results,” said Dr Sayyed K Malik from UK. He was addressing doctors from across the country during the 28th National Conference of Indian Society of Organ Transplant on Sunday.
Dr Malik said that the cost of the research is over 20 million dollars but the positive results would have a tremendous development in the world. Another expert from England, Dr Sanjay Sinha discussed about the need of pancreas transplant to provide relief to the patients suffering from diabetes.
He said, “Pancreas transplant is helpful only for the patients suffering from type 1 diabetes and also have renal failure. It is not for those suffering from type to diabetes due to overweight and inactive life.” Only 65 pancreas transplants have taken place in the country yet and the number is high in European countries, thanks to unawareness among people.
Dr Ashish Sharma of Chandigarh said that those suffering from diabetes can extend their life only by doing regular exercise and by avoiding intake of carbohydrates. On the conclusion ceremony of the conference, organising secretary Dr Sandeep Saxena said that the conference provided a platform for the doctors to share their experiences and knowledge in transplants and its need. He said that more than 900 doctors from across the country participated in the event and learnt from each other’s researches and cases.
