Bhopal: Mukhyamantri Medhavi Vidyarthi Yojana (MMVY), launched amid fanfare has proved to be a nightmare to beneficiaries. Among 6,816 students selected under the scheme only 350 have so far received the scholarship amount. The rest are still waiting even though the first academic trimester is over in most educational institutions.
On June 12, this year chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had launched MMVY for meritorious students of both MP State Board and CBSE but with different criteria. The scheme aimed at providing financial assistance to meritorious students who had cleared class XII with either 75% marks in state board or 85% in CBSE board.
The scheme was meant to benefit meritorious students who procure admissions in either medical colleges or engineering courses but are unable to continue it due financial constraints.
The scheme was latched up by state students resulting in 28,083 registrations. Among them, 15,897 applications were verified by respective educational institutions. Later, the state okayed 6,816 applicants under the scheme. However, only 350 ‘lucky’ students have actually reaped the benefit of the scheme so far.
Among those pursuing medical courses, only 145 managed to get their applications verified by their institutions. However, only a meagre six got government’s nod. Similarly in engineering courses applications of 327 students were verified by their institutions and among them 43 got the nod.
Recently, students of a private medical college had demonstrated at directorate of medical education stating that the college was pressurising them into depositing the fee even though they were yet to receive the scholarship amount. Talking to Free Press, medical education commissioner Sheo Shekhar Shukla said that scholarship distribution would be done by technical education department of the MMVY cell.
State technical education minister Deepak Joshi said, “Yes, MMVY scholarship has been transferred into bank accounts of only 350 students till date. The disbursement of scholarship amount has started only on Friday. I assure that each and every eligible student will get the benefit of MMVY. The department will speed up the distribution process soon.”
