Bigg Boss across languages: What Salman Khan, Sudeep, Kamal Haasan, Jr NTR bring to the table

The past five months have been all about Bigg Boss in every corner of the country. While the Telugu and Tamil versions of the reality show concluded recently, Bigg Boss 11 (Hindi) started in October and Bigg Boss Kannada 5 kicked off on Sunday.

What has been the most noticeable aspect of Bigg Boss, across all four industries, is that a top star of that respective industry serves as the host. Salman Khan stepped into the shoes of Bigg Boss host for the umpteenth time after he gave his nod to be the face of the 11th season this year.

While his previous stints were marked by signature humour, he was more strict with the contestants this time. In an exclusive interview to Firstpost, Khan revealed why. "“I keep in mind that children, women and even senior citizens are watching the show, but yes, there is this game of TRPs, I understand. But if TRPs need to be raised with violence and abusive language then I definitely don't approve of that. I try and stop that right in the beginning. This is the host's home too. You need to take care of your guest so that they have a comfortable stay. But when certain contestants get out of control then they have to be told — ‘Leave my home’. I know kids watch the show, my mother watches, everyone else’s mother watches it — and when they cross the limits, it is not acceptable," said Khan.

When Kamal Haasan was announced as the host of Bigg Boss Tamil, he confessed he did not watch Salman's show. That turned out to be in his favour as he brought his own style to the table. Amidst multiple controversies and lawsuits, Haasan made sure to speak his mind on the show. He even used the platform in the grand finale to formally announce his entry into Tamil Nadu politics.

"I'm definitely coming there (pointing to audiences). Don't think I'm exploiting this stage. I'm speaking now from the bottom of my heart. These are my real words. If you think I should continue acting in movies, say it. If you think it's time for me to be a part of the change and serve society, say it loudly. Now, my wish is to die in the service of my nation, and I'm totally prepared for it," said Haasan, in the season finale.

Immediately after Haasan was announced as the host of the Tamil version of Bigg Boss, Jr NTR was roped in as that of Bigg Boss Telugu. TS Sudhir, in a column for Firstpost, lauded the makers' decision to opt for Jr NTR.

"Star Maa was looking for someone with spontaneity and energy, and these two aspects define Tarak (Jr NTR)," said Mahesh Koneru, trade analyst who closely tracks the Telugu film space. "Since the show does not have a fixed script, it will work for Tarak, who has a sense of humour," he added. And lest it be missed, the name NTR still works like magic in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Now that Sudeep has commenced his fifth stint as the host of Bigg Boss Kannada, fans are curious about the style he will adopt on the show. Whether he will bring Jr NTR's energy, Haasan's boldness, Salman's disciplinarian approach or stick to his own arsenal, is a mystery ready to get unfolded.
