Gurgaon: Diwali rush choked the roads near the Delhi-Gurgaon border during peak hours on Monday evening.
On the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway, long snarls were reported near the now-defunct toll plaza that led to tailbacks extending till Cyber City. On the opposite side on the high-speed corridor, traffic towards Iffco Chowk moved slowly between 6 pm and 8 pm.
According to Gurgaon police, the volume of traffic was unexpectedly high on Monday as many office-workers were leaving the city for Delhi after the last day of work before the festive holidays, choking the roads at the Gurgaon-Delhi border.
The criss-cross traffic at Rangpuri turn near Rajokri, along with construction work at Rajokri near the entry to the city from Delhi and at Rao-Tula Ram Marg, only increased the pressure on the loaded expressway.
The traffic movement at Kapashera border was also slow and caused snarls on the Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road. Other parts of the city, including Sohna Road, Shankar Chowk Road and Jwala Mills Road also witnessed snarls.
Traffic police though said they had deployed adequate personnel at various junctions to control the situation. "My SHOs are present on the field and are monitoring the situation," said Simardeep Singh, DCP (traffic).
