Writer Namita Gokhale receives first Centenary National Award for Literature by Asam Sahitya Sabha

Dr Dhruba Jyoti Borah, the President of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, awarded Gokhale the honour for her significant contributions to the field of Literature.

Eminent writer Namita Gokhale, known for her works such as Paro: Dreams of Passion and A Himalayan Love Story, has been awarded the first-ever Centenary National Award for Literature by the Asam Sahitya Sabha, one of the most prestigious literary organisations in India. At a special function in Guwahati, Dr Dhruba Jyoti Borah, the President of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, awarded Gokhale the honour for her significant contributions to Literature.

“It is a unique honour to have received the first Centenary National Literature Award from the Asam Sahitya Sabha. The soul of Indian literature resides in our Indian languages, and so this recognition from such a renowned organization gains even deeper meaning and value for me,” said Gokhale. Established in 1917, the Asam Sahitya Sabha decided to mark their centenary celebrations by instituting the Centenary National Award for Literature. The non-profit, non-governmental organisation chose to present their first award to Gokhale for creating a conducive environment for literature to thrive in the country and for her service to the nation.

Borah described Gokhale as one of the finest Indian writers, who is “knitting the country together across languages through literature”.

A writer, publisher and festival director, Gokhale has authored 16 works of fiction and non-fiction and as the founder and co-director of the ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival and Mountain Echoes, the Bhutan Literature Festival, has remained committed to showcasing Indian writing in its best form.
