Let’s face it. You can never be bored when you have a Netflix subscription. Netflix originals themselves are enough to satisfy your entertainment needs, and you rarely have to move beyond them. The usual suspects like Narcos, Stranger Things and House of Cards must have instantly come to your mind. But Netflix has a few hidden gems that are equally worth watching. Here is a list of five such shows and movies that you likely have not heard much of, but everybody worth his salt give them a watch nonetheless.

Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones is one of the most underrated superhero shows around in this era of superhero movies and TV shows. Jessica Jones stars Krysten Ritter (Jane Margolis of Breaking Bad) in the title role and you immediately become aware that this is not your usual superhero fare. Premiered on November 20, 2015, this show is known for exploring darker themes like rape and post-traumatic disorder which most superhero stories steer clear of. Even if you do not like superheroes in general, you might just fall in love with Jessica Jones.

Gerald’s Game

It is a pity that one of the most faithful Stephen King adaptations ever made received little attention. Gerald’s Game perfectly captures the essence of a dark and twisted King novel of the same name in spirit if not in plot. A woman is left bound to bedposts with steel handcuffs with her husband dead after their planned BDSM session goes terribly wrong. What follows elicits the deepest fears inside the viewer and this is not your ordinary ghost story involving scary monsters. It is instead a more realistic story where your own inner demons that you thought were things of the past come back.

The Returned

This is for horror fans. The Returned is the adaptation of 2012 French series Les Revenants. Inhabitants living in a small American town get shocked when the people who had been dead begin to reappear. The performances are solid and the pace, while slow at first, improves with time. This is a solid option to kill time. Just make sure you watch the original French version too.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

This show is based on the children book series of the same name and follows two young siblings as they try to protect themselves and their fortune from the devilish Count Olaf (played with a menacing glee by the inimitable Neil Patrick Harris). The series is the right mix of horror and comedy and you scarcely mind the improbability of the events unfolding before you, it is that entertaining.

iBoy

Starring Bill Milner and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark of Game of Thrones), iBoy is about a teenaged boy who gets shrapnel from his phone lodged inside his brain and gets strange abilities like visualising mobile signals and controlling electronic devices. The premise is interesting and performances good.
