A suicide note recovered by the police from his residence said he was highly diabetic, suffering from blood pressure and going through depression due to this prolonged illness. Shelar has mentioned the illness as the reason for taking the extreme step, police said.
Mumbai : Congress Spokesperson and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee secretary Mahadev Maruti Shelar (64) committed suicide at his Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg residence in Mulund on Saturday. He was highly diabetic and depressed due to the prolonged illness.
Shelar hanged himself from the ceiling fan with a nylon rope. His wife Mangala (64) had gone to the market when he hanged himself late in the afternoon. When Mangala returned home, he did not answer the door bell but entered the flat using a separate key, she was shocked to see her husband hanging from the ceiling fan.
Mangala alerted her neighbours and they immediately rushed him to Fortis hospital at Mulund. The doctors, however, declared him brought dead.

Shelar has mentioned the illness as the reason for taking the extreme step,” Akhilesh Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 7, said.
Shelar’s friends said he had cut off communication completely. His depression worsened after his friends and two colleagues, Balkrishna Purnekar and Sanjay Chaupane, of Congress died in a car accident recently.
Mulund police have registered an Accidental Death Record (ADR). The couple were staying alone at their residence. The couple has a son and a daughter. Shelar was also a qualified lawyer.
