Bhopal: Police seize Rs 80 lakh meant for hawala trade

Bhopal: Police have arrested two persons from Mangalwara area with a bag containing a sum of Rs 80 lakh, which they were taking to Mumbai for circulating in hawala trade. The police arrested them on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

The accused have been identified as Dayanand Kukreja and Ashok Bhadwani who are being quizzed in connection with the racket for which they worked.

According to Mangalwara police station house officer Sudesh Tiwari, the accused were on a two-wheeler. When a police team signalled them to stop, they tried to run but were nabbed at Punjabi Colony. When questioned, they said they own shops in Mangalwara area.


Tiwari said they refused to open the box stating that it contained Rs 30 lakh, which had to be delivered to their partner in Bhopal. An intense grilling followed. The two accused finally broke down and told police that money was meant for hawala trade. Police opened the box and found Rs 75 lakh in a bag while Rs 5 lakh were kept inside the bag’s pocket.

The accused said they went to Mumbai at least 20 times with money for hawala trade. This time, they were assigned the task of handing over the money to a person called Harish at Lokmanya Tilak terminus station in Mumbai.

Based on information provided by accused, police are investigating to know more about the hawala racket and its nexus.
