Carpenter hangs self, cites pressure from moneylenders

HYDERABAD: A 30-year-old carpenter, who was allegedly harassed by five moneylenders including his relatives, committed suicide by hanging self to the ceiling at his shop, leaving behind a video, on Wednesday in Shahinayathgunj police limits.The deceased, identified as Mohammed Shahid Hussain, is a resident of Moghul colony of Mailardevpally and was running a shop in Jumerath Bazar in Shahinayathgunj police limits. In his video before committing suicide, Shahid said that Kailash, Sultana, Kishore, Abid Ali, Jabeen have harassed him to return money. He took a total of Rs 9 lakh from five persons and used to pay Rs 3 lakh per month as interest for Rs 9 lakh. 

As the shutters to his shop were closed only partially, the neighbours noticed Shahid who screamed for help and was brought down from the noose. He was shifted to a nearby hospital where doctors referred him to shift to Osmania hospital. Doctors at OGH declared him brought dead. Police have registered cases under section 306 (Abetment of suicide) against five persons based on suicide note and detained two persons. 

The Shahinayathgunj police inspector M Ravinder Reddy said that Shahid Hussain had started a business of remodeling second hand wooden material and used to sell them from his shop in Jumerath Bazar for the last few years. “To run his business, he had taken an loan from known and unknown persons including three of his family members at higher interest rates. Due to poor business, he was unable to return the amount following which the moneylenders started pressurising the victim to return amount. Unable to bear harassment, Shahid Hussain took the extreme step,’’ the inspector said. His body was shifted for post mortem. Later, the body was handed over to his family members.
