There is a sustained attempt in Jammu and Kashmir to draw out a conspiracy to target the Indian forces and the Intelligence Bureau by blaming them for incidents of braid chopping.
At least 350 such incidents have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir, officials say.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Khan, while talking to the media, said braid chopping incidents were first reported in Jammu region where 250 cases came to fore. In Kashmir, he said, so far, around 100 such cases, mostly from south and central parts, have been reported.
While the police have repeatedly said that these incidents are more psychological in nature, there is a brigade in the Valley which wants to shift the blame on the Indian agencies. The Hurriyat in fact said that this was being done by the IB to divert attention from the freedom movement.
An IB officer informed that the problem is that most of these cases are landing up the police stations. All cases have been a fiction of imagination and these needs to be addressed by doctors.
Baseer Khan added that apart from police investigation, the district as well as divisional administration has formed teams of doctors, psychiatrists, social welfare and revenue officers to closely look into the cases of braid chopping happening in Kashmir valley.
Meanwhile J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said that these incidents are aimed at undermining the dignity of women. Braid chopping incidents are attempts to create mass hysteria and undermine the dignity of the women in the state," she tweeted.
"Government will ensure steps are taken to find the motives behind these attacks," she also said.
