Night beat police attached to Yelahanka police station were accused of assaulting a couple for running their tea shop open beyond the 11 pm deadline on Thursday in Yelahanka New Town.

According to locals, the police assaulted Ambika (35) and Raju Kumar (41) as the couple refused to give them ‘hafta’.

According to the couple and their neighbours, the policemen barged into their house and assaulted them after a heated exchange. They said that the policemen were under the influence of alcohol.

The police, however, denied such allegations and claimed that the couple was running the tea stall beyond the deadline and got into an argument when the beat police asked them to close down the stall.
