NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre to set up an expert committee to look into how to deal with the problems arising from the Blue Whale internet game.

Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking ban on the game, SC said that a panel should be established to suggest remedial measures to counter firewall virtual games like Blue Whale which has allegedly led to several suicides.

The Blue Whale game, reportedly created by a former convict in Russia, is said to psychologically provoke players to indulge in daring, self-destructive tasks for 50 days before finally taking the "winning" step of killing themselves -- and each task must be filmed and shared as "proof". The game has claimed many lives worldwide.

The apex court also restrained high courts, where similar petitions against the game have been filed, from entertaining similar pleas.

The matter was brought by Sneha Kalita, a Delhi-based lawyer, before a bench headed by Chief Justice who asked government to submit response over the issue by October 27.
