Sustainable devpt to check Kothad’s ‘malaise’

KOCHI: ‘Shakti-Kerala’, in association with the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment on Wednesday started a science awareness project for preventing ecological degradation through sustainable development in Kothad Island.  S Sharma MLA inaugurated the project at the HSS English Medium Annexe Hall at Kothad  and Prema A K, ‘Shakti Kerala’ president,  delivered the presidential address.

The project was launched after it emerged the natural habitat of the of the island had been adversely impacted by  unsustainable growth due to developmental projects. “The project aims to create the necessary awareness among the island dwellers. The aim is to cultivate a habit  among the island’s residents to manage biodegradable waste at source,  spread the use of Bhoomitra cloth bags instead of plastics and create awareness against littering the island or the surrounding water with non-biodegradable waste,” according to the proponents of the project.The awareness programme is aimed at students, parents, housewives and Kudumbashree activists. GVHSS, Kadamakudy, and HSS of Jesus,  Kothad have been identified as the schools for implementing the project.

Aarushi Talwar, 14, was found dead with her throat slit in her bedroom in flat no. L-32 Jalvayu Vihar, Noida on the morning of May 16, 2008. The body of Hemraj, who was initially suspected of murdering her, was found in a pool of blood on the terrace of the flat, the following day. The Allahabad High Court on October 12, 2017 acquitted the dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar and quashed their conviction in the murder of their teenage daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj.
