City to witness first exclusive marathon for children tomorrow
tnn | Updated: Oct 14, 2017, 00:09 ISTCoimbatore: In a first, the city will on Sunday host a marathon exclusively for the children. Titled Kidathon, as many as 1,600 children from six districts are expected to participate in the event to be held in five categories - 200m, 400m, 2.4km and 4km. The proceeds from the event will go towards building toilets in schools for underprivileged children.
"Most marathons have age restriction and allow only children above 10-14 years to participate. So, we decided to launch a marathon exclusively for children with an objective to make them fit for long distance run at a young age," said Lakshmiganth Krishnan of Rush Republic, which organises the event in association with the city-based event organiser, the Round Table of India.
True to its name, Kidathon will allow children from 1-14 years to participate in the event. "Children aged between one and three will be taken for a fun run cum walk on strollers for 200m by their parents, while the minimum distance for three to five-year olds will be 400m," Krishnan said.
Children aged between five and eight can participate in the 800m run, while 2.4km and 4km run are open to children above eight years.
The categories of run for children belonging to different age groups were finalised based on the advice from sporting experts, Krishnan added.
Avinash Jaiswal, who was a member of Indian junior hockey team, had been training around 300-350 children for the event for the past four weeks.
